Vosgian Pictures

This three-movement work describes the Vosges, a range of low mountains in the north-east of France. In the slow introduction of the first movement, we fall under the spell of this beautiful region. Then the music becomes more lively, as we get acquainted with the various activities that the Vosges have to offer: hiking, Nordic walking, horse riding, cycling, canoeing, swimming, fishing and climbing – as well as cross-country skiing in the winter season.

The second movement expresses the feeling that you experience when you visit the picturesque places of the Vosges, and set eyes on the breathtaking views over the valleys. This emotion is conveyed by the lyrical music, first soft and then grand, followed by a return to the serenity that emanates from the mountains.

The third movement depicts the power of nature, represented by the highest mountain of the range: the Grand Ballon. After a powerful introduction, we hear the optimistic energy of hikers and cyclists trying to reach the summit. When they do, a hymn rings out in honour of the highest point, where they admire the Vosges lying at their feet. This hymn begins slowly, but then develops toward a majestic and imposing ending.
