The River knows your Name

In memory of Lothar Kopp (1949 – 2022)

 

This composition paints a musical portrait of the German city of Dillingen on the river Saar. The river, as silent witness, holds the names of all who have ever lived in this region — and those who live there still.

 

The introduction depicts the river’s journey as it flows towards its confluence with the Mosel. In a lively dance, the first names the river reveals are those of the Romans, who founded the first settlement here. The music then portrays the beautiful Saar Cathedral, where believers give voice to the names of those they remember.

 

A powerful passage follows, reflecting Dillingen’s entrepreneurial spirit, shaped by its renowned metal industry. Suddenly, a clarinet solo emerges — a motif from a theme composed by the late honorary conductor of the band, Lothar Kopp, in tribute to this region. The river knows his name too. From this motif, the music flows with growing emotion toward its conclusion, moving from tones of remembrance to true euphoria.

 

In the final bars, the opening theme of the river returns, now rhythmically vibrant and filled with joy.
