About Sa Música
Sa Música is based on the history and atmosphere of the Spanish island of Mallorca. It begins with a majestic introduction inspired by the Greek colonists who founded the temple of Heracles Maliorcas and the Romans who occupied Mallorca in 123 BC under Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus. This is followed by a theme that conjures up the traditional processions on Mallorca.
The Spanish influences are clear in the next fast theme, a real fiesta. After that we hear a slow lyrical theme, which Jacob de Haan composed on the words from the famous poem about pirates: Canción del pirata by José de Espronceda.
Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
Que es mi dios la libertad,
Mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
Mi única patria, la mar.
My treasure is my gallant barque,
My only God is liberty,
My law is might, the wind my mark,
My country is the sea.
Performance Note
This theme can also be sung in the original Spanish with one or more singers or choir. We then hear a cheerful dance combined with the procession theme, followed by sounds from La Balanguera, the official anthem of the island. Finally the Spanish theme returns, assuring a festive conclusion.
