Images of Bellac

Images of Bellac is based on a series of images of the beautiful village of Bellac in Limousin, France. The work depicts different scenes and sights of the village using wonderful themes as well as energetic rhythmical sequences symbolising the positive and dynamic attitude of the inhabitants. Well suited for any concert or a contest.

The work opens with a depiction of the village shrouded in fog: we hear a solo trumpet playing in the distance. The church tower of Notre­Dame de Lorette can hardly be made out through the mist. A lonely church bell breaks the silence several times. Now the trumpet theme is heard in the band. The village begins to come alive as its inhabitants stir. The fog gradually lifts and the people go about their business. This passage heralds a lyrical melody depicting the beauty of the village. This is followed by a swinging pop rhythm that reflects the dyna­mics of the town, alternating by quiet strains of the organ of Notre­Dame de Lorette. Now we are given a tour of the scenery surrounding the village and, through means of a pastorale, a celebration of nature.

Presently we hear a market setting up, with a variety of musical acts – a folklore group dancing to old folk music, for example. Then we hear the Bellac village band approaching the square, soun­ding the theme of the solo trumpet through the streets in a march: first of all restrained, then in its full glory. As the band slowly fades away, the single trumpet sounds once more, from a distance, and the work concludes with a splendid final passage.
